Android 2.2 Could Include Built-In Tethering and Wi-Fi Hotspot Sharing [Rumors]

Wow, this would be a sweet “end run” around the certain service providers which will not be named. I use a single-user tethering solution, but would love to have the functionality built in.

TechCrunch is reporting that “Froyo,” the next version of the Android smartphone operating system expected to be released next week at Google’s I/O conference, will pack in more than just big compiling speed improvements and fragmentation fixes. It could also include built-in USB tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot sharing, allowing everyone around you to share your mobile data connection. That doesn’t sound like something that every carrier is going to be happy about, and TechCrunch’s batting average on Google scoops is far from 1.000. This time, though, there are decently believable screenshots (not that they can’t be doctored), and both USB tethering and Wi-Fi connection sharing have long been available in unofficial/”rooted” Android builds. Stay tuned. [TechCrunch] More »
